Objetivo:Verificar o efeito da idade e escolaridade na compreensão de inferências a partir de textos escritos em indivíduos normais.Métodos:224 adultos foram divididos em nove grupos, de acordo com a idade (jovens: 18–39 anos, adultos: 40–59 anos e idosos: 60–79 anos) e escolaridade (baixa ≤4 anos, média: 5–8 anos e alta >8 anos) e avaliados por meio da bateria La gestion de l'implicite (Teste de Gerenciamento do Implícito) para determinar a habilidade de compreender inferências, através de diferentes tipos de questões: explícitas, lógicas, distratoras, pragmáticas e outras.Resultados:Os idosos apresentaram pior desempenho na pontuação total do teste e nas questões distratoras. Quanto à escolaridade, todos os grupos se diferenciaram nas questões explícitas, lógicas, distratoras e na pontuação total do teste. Os sujeitos com alta escolaridade apresentaram melhor desempenho nas inferências pragmáticas e outras.Conclusão:A influência da idade na compreensão de inferências pode estar relacionada a dificuldades atencionais e de funções executivas. O forte efeito da escolaridade deve-se à interação da habilidade inferencial com diversas funções cognitivas, como linguagem e memória operacional, além de conhecimento de mundo.

Purpose:To determine the effect of age and education on inferential comprehension from written texts in normal individuals.Methods:A total of 224 normal adults were stratified into nine groups according to age (young: 18–39 years, adults: 40–59 years, and elderly: 60–79 years) and educational level (low ≤4 years, medium: 5–8 years and high >8 years) and were evaluated through the battery La gestion de l'implicite (Implicit Information Management Test) to determine the ability to make inferences through different types of questions: explicit, logical, distractor, pragmatic and others.Results:The elderly showed worse performance for total score and distractor questions. Regarding educational level, all groups differed on explicit, logical, distractor questions, and on total test score. Subjects with high schooling performed better on pragmatic inferences and others.Conclusion:Age influence on the comprehension of inferences may be due to difficulties in attention and executive functions. The strong effect of education can be explained by the interaction of inferential abilities with other cognitive functions such as working memory, vocabulary span, as well as world knowledge.

RESUMO Dificuldades de linguagem e comunicação podem ocorrer na população idosa. Esse é o caso do fenômeno da ponta da língua e também dificuldades de recepção e compreensão auditiva. Poucos estudos se dedicam a examinar efeitos da exposição social na manutenção da comunicação, no processo do envelhecimento. Objetivos: [1] Descrever o mapa de comunicação de idosos saudáveis; [2] Buscar associações entre frequência e tempo destinados à comunicação e fatores cognitivos e sociodemográficos. Métodos: Foram examinados idosos saudáveis que realizaram rastreio cognitivo, Token Test-Revisado, Fluência verbal e responderam aos questionários ASHA-FAcs e Círculos de Interlocutores de Comunicação. Resultados: 55 sujeitos, 67% do gênero feminino, idade acima de 60 anos e escolaridades variadas compuseram a amostra. No mapa de comunicação predominaram interlocutores no círculo de amigos próximos e conhecidos embora o tempo dedicado à comunicação com esses interlocutores seja menor do que nos outros círculos. Na média geral os idosos não relataram déficits de compreensão de linguagem e houve relatos de dificuldades do tipo fenômeno de ponta de língua. Baixos desempenhos no TT-R e na fluência verbal fonêmica ao lado do relato de funcionalidade na comunicação indica que esses sujeitos compensam seus problemas. Conclusão: O número de horas de interlocução e de interlocutores não está associado à idade e escolaridade, exceto para indivíduos com maior idade e menor escolaridade os quais tendem a privilegiar a interlocução em seu círculo familiar. O tempo dedicado ao círculo de comunicação com amigos pode sinalizar dificuldades de natureza cognitiva.

ABSTRACT Language and communication difficulties may occur in the elderly population. This is the case of the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon and receptive and auditory comprehension difficulties. Few studies have focused on examining the effects of social exposure on maintaining communication in the aging process. Objectives: [1] To describe the communication map of healthy elderly subjects; [2] To search for associations between frequency and time dedicated to communication and cognitive and sociodemographic factors. Methods: Healthy elderly subjects were submitted to cognitive screening, the Token Test - Revised, and the Verbal Fluency test, and answered the ASHA-FACS and the Circles of Communication Partners questionnaires. Results: 55 subjects, 67% female, with ages over 60 years and varied schooling were included in the sample. Interlocutors in the circle of close friends and acquaintances predominated in the communication map, although the time devoted to communication with these partners was lower than in other circles. Overall, the elderly reported no deficits in language comprehension, with some reports of the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon. Poor performances on the Token Test - Revised and in phonemic verbal fluency along with reports of communication functionality indicated that these subjects compensate for their problems. Conclusion: Older subjects with lower schooling tended to predominantly communicate within the family circle. Within other circles, the number of hours devoted to communication and dialogue partners was not associated with age or schooling. The time devoted to the circle of communication with friends may indicate cognitive difficulties.

OBJETIVO: Verificar o desempenho de sujeitos brasileiros na Bateria de Nomeação de Objetos e Verbos (BNOV), de acordo com a escolaridade; e descrever os principais tipos de erro na nomeação de verbos e substantivos. MÉTODOS: A BNOV foi aplicada em 100 sujeitos normais, divididos em dois grupos (GI: quatro a oito anos de escolaridade; e GII: acima de nove anos). RESULTADOS: Houve índice total de acertos de 97,6% para os substantivos e 98,0% para verbos. Foram verificadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os grupos no número de acertos para substantivos e verbos (p<0,0001) e na proporção de ocorrência de erros semânticos para verbos (p=0,0160), registrando-se pior desempenho entre os sujeitos menos escolarizados. CONCLUSÃO: A BNOV é adequada para uso em adultos falantes do Português Brasileiro. O grupo com maior escolaridade apresentou maior número de "acertos"; ambos os grupos tiveram maior proporção de "erros semânticos" para verbos e substantivos.

PURPOSE: To verify the performance of a sample of Brazilian subjects in the "An Object and Action Naming Battery" (OANB), according to schooling; and to describe the main error types in nouns and verbs naming. METHODS: The OANB was applied in 100 healthy subjects, divided in two groups (GI: four to eight years of schooling; and GII: above nine years). RESULTS: There were correct answers for 97.6% for nouns and 98.0% for verbs. There were statistically significant differences between the groups in the number of correct answers for nouns and verbs (p<0.0001) and in the proportion of semantic errors for verbs (p=0.0160), with less educated subjects performing poorer than higher educated ones. CONCLUSION: The OANB may be used in adult Brazilian Portuguese native speakers. The group with higher education had higher scores; both groups had a higher proportion of "semantic errors" for verbs and nouns.

RESUMO Entre os instrumentos dirigidos à avaliação da memória semântica, temos os testes Pirâmides e Palmeiras ( Pyramids and Palm Trees - PPT) e o Beijando e Dançando ( Kissing and Dancing - KDT), para os quais não existem referências de desempenho de população brasileira normal e patológica. Objetivo: [A] Estudar esses dois testes em amostra de indivíduos jovens, sadios brasileiros, residentes na cidade de São Paulo; [B] Aplicar os resultados na avaliação de dois casos diagnosticados no espectro da degeneração lobar frontotemporal. Métodos: Avaliamos 50 participantes normais (41 mulheres e 9 homens) com idade entre 20-63 anos e escolaridade entre 14-20 anos. Adicionalmente foram examinados dois sujeitos com diagnóstico de degeneração lobar frontotemporal: um com demência frontotemporal-variante comportamental e outro com demência semântica. Resultados: Não observamos efeitos de idade, gênero e escolaridade na performance dos indivíduos normais nos dois testes. Obtivemos os valores de 46 pontos no PPT e 47 no KDT como indicativos de risco de déficit em memória semântica. A análise dos dois casos mostrou dupla dissociação na determinação de associações entre substantivos e verbos. Embora os pacientes apresentassem escores rebaixados nos dois testes, o paciente com demência frontotemporal-variante comportamental obteve melhor desempenho no PPT quando comparado ao KDT e o paciente com demência semântica mostrou padrão inverso, com melhor desempenho no KDT. Conclusão: Os testes PPT e KDT são aplicáveis à população brasileira, com necessidade de mínimos ajustes. Foi possível obter valores representativos de desempenho de população sadia, assim como vislumbrar o emprego em avaliações cognitivas de memória semântica nas DLFT.

ABSTRACT Among the instruments to evaluate semantic memory, the Pyramids and Palm Trees (PPT) and the Kissing and Dancing (KDT) tests are widely used but none have a performance referential for cognitively normal and impaired Brazilian populations. Objective: [A] To study these two tests in a sample of young healthy Brazilian individuals living in São Paulo; [B] To apply the results to the evaluation of two cases diagnosed with frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Methods: We evaluated 50 normal participants (41 females and 9 males) aged between 20-63 years, with schooling level of 14-20 years. In addition, two individuals diagnosed with frontotemporal lobar degeneration were examined, one with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia and the other with semantic dementia. Results: On the two tests, no effects of age, gender and schooling on the performance of normal individuals were observed. According to the performance of the sample of controls, scores below 46 points on the PPT and below 47 on the KDT are suggestive of deficits in semantic memory. The analyses of both cases indicated double dissociation in establishing associations between nouns and action verbs. Although the two patients had low scores on both tests, the patient with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia performed better on the PPT compared to the KDT, while the patient with semantic dementia showed the reverse, performing better on the KDT. Conclusion: The PPT and KDT are suitable tests for use in the Brazilian population, with minimal need for adjustments. They are applicable tools both for cognitive assessment and research in semantic memory. In the present study, we obtained representative values of performance for cognitively unimpaired individuals and demonstrated the utility of these instruments for cognitive assessment of patients with FTLD.

RESUMO Este estudo ofereceu uma revisão sistemática de intervenções não-farmacológicas aplicadas a pacientes com Afasia Progressiva Primária (APP) e suas variantes: Semântica (APPS), Não-fluente (APPNF) e Logopênica (APPL) com o objetivo de estabelecer recomendações baseadas em evidências para a prática clínica de reabilitação cognitiva para estes pacientes. Métodos: Conduziu-se busca por literatura, sem restrição de período, no PubMed e LILACS com as palavras-chave PPA (e variantes) AND rehabilitation OR training OR intervention OR therapy OR treatment OR effectiveness. Para desenvolver recomendações baseadas em evidências um comitê de pesquisadores identificou as questões relevantes para investigação e determinou o nível de evidência para cada estudo de acordo com critérios publicados (Cicerone et al., 2000). A evidência total para os tratamentos foi sumarizada e recomendações redigidas. Resultados: Foram encontrados artigos publicados de 1995 a 2013: 21 para APPS, 8 para APPNF, 3 para APPL e 8 para APP sem especificações. Trinta e cinco estudos foram classificados como Classe III, consistindo de resultados obtidos com um ou mais indivíduos e utilizando metodologia apropriada para estudo de casos. O nível de evidência de três intervenções funcionais não pôde ser estabelecido. Um estudo foi classificado como Classe II e consistiu de pesquisa caso-controle não-randomizada. Conclusão: Resultados positivos foram reportados em todos os trabalhos analisados mas, para serem recomendados, os tratamentos requerem investigação em relação a sua eficácia. Resultados da presente revisão permitiram recomendação de algumas intervenções como Opções Práticas. Ademais, apresentamos sugestões para futuros estudos de intervenção em APP.

ABSTRACT This study provided a systematic review on nonpharmacological interventions applied to patients diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) and its variants: Semantic (SPPA), Nonfluent (NFPPA) and Logopenic (LPPA) to establish evidence-based recommendations for the clinical practice of cognitive rehabilitation for these patients. Methods: A PubMed and LILACS literature search with no time restriction was conducted with the keywords PPA (and its variants) AND rehabilitation OR training OR intervention OR therapy OR treatment OR effectiveness. To develop its evidence-based recommendations, a research committee identified questions to be addressed and determined the level of evidence for each study according to published criteria (Cicerone et al., 2000). Overall evidence for treatments was summarized and recommendations were derived. Results: Our search retrieved articles published from 1995 to 2013: 21 for SPPA, 8 for NFPPA, 3 for LPPA and 8 for PPA with no specification. Thirty-five studies were rated as Class III, consisting of studies with results obtained from one or more single-cases and that used appropriate single-subject methods with adequate quantification and analysis of results. The level of evidence of three functional interventions could not be established. One study was rated as Class II and consisted of a nonrandomized case-control investigation. Conclusion: Positive results were reported in all reviewed studies. However, in order to be recommended, some investigation regarding the intervention efficacy was required. Results of the present review allows for recommendation of some nonpharmacological interventions for cognitive deficits following PPA as Practice Options. Suggestions for further studies on PPA interventions and future research are discussed.

Resumo Desconhece-se a distribuição da geração de itens/tempo, no desempenho de idosos na fluência verbal (FV). Objetivo: Analisar número de itens produzidos, sua distribuição e o impacto do primeiro quartil no resultado final da prova. Métodos: 31 indivíduos (média de idade=74 anos; escolaridade média=8.16) realizaram testes. Resultados: O número de itens produzidos no primeiro quartil diferiu dos demais nas fluências semântica e fonológica; 40% dos itens foi produzido no primeiro quartil. Não houve efeito de idade e a escolaridade influenciou o primeiro e segundo quartis da fluência semântica e os três primeiros quartis da fluência fonêmica. Discussão: O estudo mostra que a curva assintótica de desempenho nos quartis da FV pode ser notada antes dos 30 segundos observados em prévios estudos, já nos 15 segundos iniciais. Adicionalmente, nosso estudo mostra que o efeito de escolaridade está associado ao desempenho nos dois primeiros quartis na fluência semântica e aos três primeiros quartis na fluência fonêmica. Conclusão: O efeito de escolaridade foi notado em aspectos semânticos e executivos da FV. A forma abreviada da FV é interessante proposta para a avaliação clínica.

Abstract The distribution of item generation/time in the performance of elderly on verbal fluency (VF) remains unknown. Objective: To analyze the number of items, their distribution and impact of the first quartile on the final test result. Methods: 31 individuals performed the tests (average age=74 years; schooling=8.16 years). Results: The number of items produced in the first quartile differed from the other quartiles for both semantic and phonologic VF where 40% of items were produced in the first quartile. No effect of age was found and schooling influenced performance on the first and second quartiles of semantic VF and on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quartiles of phonemic VF. Discussion: This study contributes with the finding that asymptotic levels are attained prior to the 30 seconds observed in other studies, being reached at the 15-second mark. Furthermore, schooling was found to be associated to the number of items produced in both the first and 2nd quartiles for semantic VF, and in 1st, 2nd and 3rd quartiles for phonemic fluency. Conclusion: The schooling effect was noted both in semantic and executive aspects of VF. The brief form of the VF test may represent a promising tool for clinical evaluation.

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar os problemas de alimentação e deglutição em indivíduos com doença de Alzheimer (DA) em fases moderada e grave e correlacioná-las com os aspectos funcionais. MÉTODO: Participaram do estudo 50 pacientes com DA e seus 50 cuidadores. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: Estadiamento clínico da demência (CDR), Mini-Exame do Estado Mental, Índice das Atividades de Vida Diária, Questionário de Habilidades de Alimentação e Deglutição, Questionário para Avaliação da Comunicação Funcional na Afasia, Escala de Gravidade da Deglutição. RESULTADOS: No grupo CDR2 foram encontrados problemas como passividade, distração e recusa do alimento. No grupo CDR3 predominou a distração, passividade e velocidade de alimentação inapropriada que se correlacionaram com comunicação, gravidade da deglutição e escolaridade. CONCLUSÃO: Dadas as alterações funcionais inexoráveis no curso da doença, é imprescindível a sua observação em pacientes com prejuízos na alimentação e nos mecanismos da deglutição. O presente estudo fornece instrumentos para orientar cuidadores e profissionais.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the problems of feeding and swallowing in individuals with moderate and severe Alzheimer´s disease (AD) and to correlate these with functional aspects. METHOD: Fifty patients with AD and their caregivers participated in this study. The instruments used were: Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), Mini-Mental State Examination, Index of Activities of Daily Living, Assessment of Feeding and Swallowing Difficulties in Dementia, Functional Outcome Questionnaire for Aphasia, and Swallowing Rating Scale. RESULTS: Problems with passivity, distraction and refusal to eat were encountered in the CDR2 group. Distraction, passivity and inappropriate feeding velocity were predominant in the CDR3 group. The problems were correlated with communication, swallowing severity of AD individuals and caregiver schooling. CONCLUSION: Given the inexorable functional alterations during the course of the disease, it is vital to observe these in patients with a compromised feeding and swallowing mechanism. The present study supplies the instruments to orient caregivers and professionals.

Resumo A fluência verbal (FV) fonêmica tem sido um dos instrumentos mais frequentemente utilizados em atividades clínicas e de pesquisa, de modo isolado ou incluída em baterias recomendadas para a detecção de alterações cognitivas. A versão fonêmica da FV é uma variante interessante para o diagnóstico cognitivo, particularmente porque estudos indicam sua resistência aos efeitos do envelhecimento. Objetivos: 1. Estimar os efeitos de envelhecimento na FV fonêmica, na forma original, com os fonemas /f/-/a/-/s/. 2. Estimar os efeitos de fonema/letra alternativo P e comparar com a forma original de geração de itens. 3. Verificar associações entre o Token Teste (TT), Mini-Exame do Estado Mental (MEEM) e sintomas depressivos na geração de itens com fonemas /f/-/a/-/s/-/p/. Métodos: Quarenta e oito indivíduos saudáveis com idade entre 30 e 80 anos foram avaliados com o MEEM, TT e testes de FV fonêmica. Resultados: A idade correlacionou-se com o MEEM, TT e sintomas depressivos. Não houve associação entre idade e desempenho no teste de fluência independentemente do fonema/letra utilizado. Tomando-se em consideração o conjunto de fatores sociodemográficos, a idade teve impacto significativo no desempenho. Não houve efeito de fonema na geração de itens, quando se comparou a forma tradicional, com F-A-S e o fonema P. Conclusões: A forma tradicional de apresentação do F-A-S pode ser intercambiada com a apresentação modificada, então é possível usar ambas as formas em atividade clínica e de pesquisa. A FV fonêmica é um instrumento interessante para detectar alterações cognitivas no idoso, dada sua estabilidade no processo de envelhecimento.

Abstract Verbal fluency (VF) has been one of the most frequently used instruments in clinics and research, both independently or included in a battery recommended for the detection of cognitive alterations. Phonemic-verbal fluency (PVF) is an interesting variant for cognitive diagnosis particularly because studies indicate that it is less influenced by age. Objectives: 1. To estimate the effects of age on PVF tests in their original forms, with the /f/-/a/-/s/ phonemes. 2. To estimate the effects of the phoneme /p/ and compare it to the original form in item generation. 3. To verify associations between the Token Test (TT), Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) and depressive symptoms on performance with /f/-/a/-/s/-/p/ phonemes. Methods: Forty-eight healthy individuals with ages ranging from 30 to 80 years were evaluated with the MMSE, TT and PVF tests. Results: Age was correlated with the MMSE, TT and depressive symptoms. There was no association between age and performance on the fluency test, independent of the phoneme used. Among the socio-demographic factors studied, age had a significant impact on performance. There was no phoneme effect in item-generation, when comparing the traditional form of VF (/f/-/a/-/s/) and the /p/ phoneme. Conclusions: The traditional form of FAS is interchangeable with the modified presentation, therefore both forms may be used in clinical or research settings. PVF is a valuable approach for detecting cognitive alterations in the aged, given its stability throughout the ageing process.

Resumo A Bateria Breve de Rastreio Cognitivo - Edu (BBRC-Edu) contém nove testes, sete dos quais relacionados à memória de desenhos. Tem uma boa acurácia no diagnóstico de comprometimento cognitivo. Objetivos: Avaliar a influência da idade, sexo e nível educacional no desempenho nos testes relacionados à memória de desenhos da BBRC-Edu em sujeitos saudáveis. Métodos: Os participantes foram voluntários; os critérios de exclusão foram: analfabetismo, doenças neurológicas ou psiquiátricas, perda auditiva ou visual, condições clínicas descompensadas, etilismo, uso de drogas, e para aqueles com idade igual ou superior a 65 anos, informação de acompanhante de presença de comprometimento cognitivo ou funcional. Foram avaliados 325 indivíduos (207 mulheres), com idade média de 47.1 (±16.8) anos, variando de 19 a 81 nos, média de 9.8 (±5.0) anos de escolaridade. Análise univariada, correlações e regressão logística foram empregadas (a=0.05). Resultados: Houve correlações negativas significativas entre idade e os escores de quatro dos sete testes. A escolaridade correlacionou-se positivamente aos escores, embora a escolaridade diminua com a idade nesta amostra (rho= -0.323; p<0.001). Regressão Logística confirmou que o gênero tem influência no aprendizado, com melhor desempenho entre as mulheres, enquanto a idade influenciou a memória incidental, memória imediata, aprendizado e evocação das figuras; e a escolaridade influenciou a identificação, memória imediata, aprendizado, evocação e reconhecimento. Conclusão: Gênero, idade e educação tiveram influência no desempenho na memória de figuras da BBRC-Edu, embora de modo diferente entre os tipos de teste.

Abstract The Brief Cognitive Battery-Edu (BCB-Edu) contains nine tests, seven of which are related to the memory of drawings, and has good accuracy in the diagnosis of cognitive impairment. Objectives: To evaluate the influence of age, gender and educational level on the performance in tests related to memory of drawings of the BCB-Edu in healthy subjects. Methods: Participants were adult volunteers; exclusion criteria were illiteracy, neurologic or psychiatric disorders, visual or hearing impairment, untreated chronic clinical conditions, alcoholism, use of drugs, and for those aged 65 or over, an informant report of cognitive or functional impairment. We evaluated 325 individuals (207 women), with a mean age of 47.1 (±16.8) years, ranging from 19 to 81, and a mean of 9.8 (±5.0) schooling-years. Univariate analyses, correlations and logistic regression were employed (a=0.05). Results: There were significant negative correlations between age and the scores in four of the seven tests. However, schooling-years were positively correlated to the scores, where schooling-years decreased with age in this sample (rho= -0.323; p<0.001). Logistic regression confirmed that gender influenced the learning of drawings, where women performed better, while age influenced incidental memory, immediate memory, learning and delayed recall of the drawings, and schooling-years influenced visual identification, immediate memory, learning, delayed recall and recognition of the drawings. Conclusion: Gender, age and education influence the performance on the memory of drawings of the BCB-Edu, although the extent of these influences differs according to the nature of the test.

Resumo Comunicação funcional é fundamental para a independência e eficiência comunicativa em resposta à demanda do dia-a-dia. Ao longo do processo demencial, déficits cognitivos podem comprometer tais habilidades. Assim, a avaliação das habilidades funcionais de comunicação deve fazer parte do protocolo de avaliação para quantificar e qualificar o impacto da deficiência na vida do paciente. Comparar as habilidades funcionais de comunicação em pacientes com degeneração lobar fronto-temporal (DLFT) e doença de Alzheimer (DA). Métodos: Foram avaliados seis familiares próximos de pacientes com diagnóstico de DA e oito familiares próximos de pacientes com diagnóstico de DLFT. Os familiares responderam à Avaliação Funcional das Habilidades de Comunicação - Asha-facs sobre o comportamento cognitivo-comunicativo dos pacientes. Análise estatística comparou o desempenho dos dois grupos em cada domínio do Asha-facs: comunicação social, comunicação de necessidades básicas, leitura, escrita e conceitos numéricos e planejamento diário. Resultados: A habilidade de comunicação funcional foi similar para pacientes com DA e com DLFT. Apenas dois itens apresentaram significância estatística: 'compreensão de inferências' (DA 6,7±1,33; DFT 2,43±2,30, p=0,017) e 'capacidade para fazer transações básicas com dinheiro' (DA 2,17±2,04; DFT 4,00±0,90, p=0,044). A comparação da pontuação média dos quarto domínios não apresentou diferença signitficativa. Conclusão: O instrumento Asha-facs mostrou-se útil na caracterização das habilidades funcionais e comunicação para pacientes com DA e com DLFT. No entanto, a análise apresentada sugere que a Asha-facs pode identificar tais déficts, mas não verificar quais aspectos diferenciam pacientes com DLFT e DA.

Abstract Functional communication is crucial for independent and efficient communicative behavior in response to every day activities. In the course of dementia progression, cognitive losses may impair these abilities. For this reason, functional communication assessment should be part of a formal assessment to quantify and qualify the impact of deficiency on patients' lives. Objective: To compare functional communication abilities in fronto-temporal lobar degeneration (FLTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: Six AD patients (mean age: 82.50±2.66 years; mean education: 5.67±3.61 years), and eight FTLD patients (mean age: 57.13±9.63 years; mean education: 10.86±6.91 years) had their close relatives answer the Functional Assessment of Communication Skills for Adults (Asha-facs) . Statistical analyses correlated the performance on each of the Asha-facs domains (social communication, communication of basic needs; reading, writing, number concept and daily planning) between both groups. Results: Analyses showed that functional communication was similar for AD and FTLD patients. Only two items had statistical difference, namely 'Comprehension of inference' (AD 6.7±1.33; FTLD 2.43±2.30, p=0.017) and 'capacity to make basic money transactions' (AD 2.17±2.04; FTLD 4.00±0.90, p=0.044). Comparison among the four domains' mean scores revealed no significant difference. Conclusion: The Asha-facs is a useful instrument to characterize functional communication abilities in both FTLD and AD. Nevertheless, the analysis presented for this sample showed that the Asha-facs could not discriminate which aspects of the FTLD and AD differed.

Resumo A memória semântica parece resistir aos efeitos do tempo e mantém estabilidade mesmo em idades mais avançadas. Objetivo: Verificar o efeito de escolaridade no conhecimento semântico de categorias inanimadas em idosos normais. Método: 48 indivíduos idosos foram divididos em três grupos baseados no nível de escolaridade e avaliados. Três testes foram aplicados: fluência verbal, nomeação e classificação de figuras. Resultados: Houve diferença significativa no desempenho dos grupos, nos três testes: fluência verbal, nomeação e categorização. Discussão: A diferença entre os grupos no teste de fluência verbal pode ser explicada pela disponibilidade de maior número de estratégias eficientes no grupo escolarizado, para resgatar os itens. Em relação ao teste de nomeação, a desvantagem do grupo menos escolarizado pode ser atribuída à restrição de vocabulário e habilidades para identificar os atributos semânticos dos itens, mais limitada nos indivíduos com menor escolaridade. Na categorização de figuras, o grupo com maior escolaridade apresentou maior número de "categorias formais", cujo conhecimento depende do aprendizado escolar. Conclusão: Os idosos com restrito acesso à instrução formal fornecida pela escola, apresentam desempenho pior nos testes de memória semântica, quando comparados com idosos escolarizados. O comportamento similar dos grupos analfabeto e pouco escolarizado é intrigante. Não sabemos se os indivíduos analfabetos se comportaram como os pouco escolarizados ou se os indivíduos pouco escolarizados se aproximaram dos analfabetos. Esta questão não respondida permanece como motivação para futuros estudos.

Abstract Semantic memory seems to resist the effects of time, remaining stable even in more advanced ages. Objective: To verify the effect of schooling level on semantic knowledge (non-living items) in normal aged. Method: 48 aged individuals were divided into three groups (based on schooling) and evaluated. Three tests were applied: verbal fluency, naming and figure classification. Results: We verified that the group with greater schooling (>8 years) differed to the illiterate and low schooling groups in most of the tasks, evoking more items in verbal fluency, correctly naming more items and presenting a greater number of "formal categories". Discussion: In the verbal fluency test, this difference could be explained by the types of strategies used by the individuals to recall words. In relation to the naming test, the effect could be attributed to limitation in the vocabulary and cognitive processing skills needed to search for semantic attributes of the figures. In categorization, this type of classification is dependent on scholastic learning. Conclusion: We concluded that both illiterate elderly and those having a low schooling level, presented poorer performance in semantic memory tests compared to the aged with a higher level of schooling. The similar behavior evidenced between illiterate and low schooling groups is intriguing. It remains unclear whether the low schooling group behaved like the illiterates or vice-a-versa. This unanswered question remains the subject of future studies.
